Read the sermon text: John 4:31-42

Read the sermon summary: After a couple of stand-alone sermons we return to our study through the Gospel of John. This Sunday, we will pick up toward the end of the story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at a well. We left off from the story at John 4:30. The disciples come back and marveled that Jesus was talking with a woman. The woman, in her joy and wonder, leaves her water jar and went into the town giving testimony of Jesus, saying, “Can this be the Christ?” And the people of the town were coming to him. In our passage for this Sunday, Jesus uses the confusion of the disciples about food to teach them a lesson about how sowing and harvesting works in the new age he has inaugurated. The gospel seeds have just been planted in the heart of the Samaritan woman, and already it is resulting in a huge harvest. This is the will and work of God which Jesus is accomplishing. It is such a delight for Jesus to do his Father’s will that he temporarily forgets about the most basic human need of food. But this harvest is just a sampling of what is to come. For when his hour comes, at the cross Jesus accomplishes the work the Father had given him when he dies as a substitute for sinners and gives eternal life to those who believe his word. In preparing for this Sunday consider the following questions: What does this passage teach us about Jesus’ desire to do God’s will? In what ways do you fail to desire to do God’s will like Jesus does? What might this passage teach us about bearing witness to Jesus and how people come to believe?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

How Firm A Foundation
How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word
What more can He say than to you He hath said
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled

Fear not I am with thee O be not dismayed
For I am thy God I will still give thee aid
I'll strengthen thee help thee
And cause thee to stand
Upheld by My gracious omnipotent hand
When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie
My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply
The flames shall not hurt thee I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine

The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not I will not desert to its foes
That soul though all hell should endeavor to shake
I'll never no never no never forsake
