Read the sermon text: John 17:20-26
Read the sermon summary: In this final portion of Jesus’ prayer, he extends his requests to those who would be his future disciples. One of his main requests in this section is that all of his followers would be one so that the world would know and believe that the Father had sent him. In this way, the unity of the church is a witness to Jesus Christ. Our oneness results in others recognizing the truth of who Jesus is. Jesus is speaking of what we would term the universal church (ie. all believers in Christ throughout history and place), but it also has important implications for the local church (individual congregations). In preparing for the sermon consider the following questions: What terms or phrases are repeated in these verses? How does Jesus describe the oneness he wants for his followers (see v. 21-23)? From where does this oneness come? What is its basis and what implications does this have for the local church?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia)
The Church's one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord
She is His new creation
By water and the Word
From heav'n He came and sought her
To be His holy bride
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died
Elect from every nation
Yet one o'er all the earth
Her charter of salvation
One Lord one faith one birth
One holy name she blesses
Partakes one holy food
And to one hope she presses
With every grace endued
'Mid toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest
Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy
Lord give us grace that we
Like them the meek and lowly
On high may dwell with Thee
Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed
By schisms rent asunder
By heresies distressed
Yet saints their watch are keeping
Their cry goes up how long
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song
