Read the sermon text: John 3:16-21

Read the sermon summary: In this passage the focus is on God’s work of sending his Son into the world. The connective word “for” which begins verse 16 signals to the reader that it is connected to the previous verse. Last week, we considered Jesus’ teaching to Nicodemus about the need to be born again. When Nicodemus asked, “How can this be?” Jesus pointed him to his own work of being lifted up in suffering, death, and eventual exaltation. It is through Christ that the Spirit is poured out onto God’s people. Verses 16-21, then, show that this lifting up of the Son of Man is rooted in the loving and redemptive plan of God in sending his Son into the world. In preparation for the service, consider the following questions: Do you notice any repetition in theseverses? What is the significance of the repetition? What contrasts do you see between God and the world? Between those who believe and those who don’t?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Man Of Sorrows
Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father's will
He took a crown of thorns
Oh that rugged cross my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honour unto Thee
Sent of heaven God's own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree
Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled
Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He's risen from the grave
