Read the sermon text: John 12:37-50

Read the sermon summary: How do you measure the success of one’s life and ministry? Is it how many have been impacted? Numbers of professions of faith? Meeting a certain set of goals or standards? In this passage, the author summarizes the ministry of Jesus. John reports that by and large people did not believe in Jesus. And many of those who did were too afraid to admit it. But this was no failure on Jesus’ (or God’s part). In fact, John shows this was exactly what Isaiah had prophesied. God’s plan had been carried forth without a hitch. In verses 44-50, John provides the reader with a summary teaching from Jesus. Many of the themes we’ve seen so far are packed into this short message (belief, seeing, hearing, light/darkness, rejection, judgment). A key element of Jesus’ message is that he is the one who has been sent from the Father. The evidence of Jesus identity has been laid out through his words and deeds. Each person is responsible to hear the call of Jesus and respond in faith. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the relationship in this passage between God’s sovereignty over faith and a person’s responsibility to believe? What do you think it means that Isaiah “saw his glory and spoke of him”? In what other instances in John do Old Testament figures see or speak of Jesus?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Be Thou My Vision (Slane)
Be Thou my vision
O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me
Save that Thou art
Thou my best thought
By day or by night
Waking or sleeping
Thy presence my light
Be Thou my wisdom
Be Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee
And Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father
I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling
And I with Thee one
Riches I heed not
Nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance
Now and always
Thou and Thou only
Be first in my heart
High King of heaven
My treasure Thou art
High King of heaven
When vict'ry is won
May I reach heaven's joys
O bright heaven's Sun
Heart of my own heart
Whatever befall
Still be my vision
O Ruler of all
