Read the sermon text: Acts 6:1-7; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; 1 Peter 5:1-4

Read the sermon summary: What would you say are the top five criteria a man must meet in order to be a pastor? Perhaps you should take a moment and list them out. What kind of person should he be? What sort of skills should he have? What is it that he should actually do? This Sunday we are beginning a brief sermon series on leadership in the church. Over the next few weeks we will cover the qualifications and responsibilities of elders, deacons, and members. This week we will consider the office of elder/pastor. What is an elder? What are the qualifications of an elder? What does a elder do? In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What sticks out to you about Paul’s list of elder qualifications in 1 Timothy 3? In what ways might some impose upon elders principles of modern leadership philosophy? What, according to these passages, are the most important roles of elders/pastors? Does that differ than your original criteria?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Jesus Paid It All (Christ I Owe)
I hear the Saviour say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in Me thine all in all

Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lord now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper's spots
And melt the heart of stone

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim
I'll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat
