Read the sermon text: Galatians 1:1-5

Read the sermon summary: This Sunday we will begin studying through the book of Galatians. We might be tempted to rush over these first introductory verses of the letter, but they are filled with important theological content. In this introduction, Paul first establishes his authority to speak to the Galatian churches. He is an apostle, commissioned by Jesus himself. Secondly, Paul establishes the truth of the gospel message. Jesus gave himself up for our sins, giving us grace and peace and reconciling us to God. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What does Paul mean that he is an apostle and why do you think he elaborates on the origin of his apostleship? Verse 4 says that Jesus gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age. In what ways were we enslaved or a part of the present evil age? How does Jesus giving himself up for our sins accomplish that deliverance?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Grace Greater Than Our Sin
Marvellous grace of our loving Lord
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt
Yonder on Calvary's mount outpoured
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt

Chorus
Grace grace God's grace
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within
Grace grace God's grace
Grace that is greater than all our sin

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold
Threaten the soul with infinite loss
Grace that is greater yes grace untold
Points to the refuge the mighty Cross

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide
What can avail to wash it away
Look there is flowing a crimson tide
Whiter than snow you may be today

Marvellous infinite matchless grace
Freely bestowed on all who believe
You that are longing to see His face
Will you this moment His grace receive
