Worship Preparation: April 24, 2022

Read the sermon text: Acts 22:22-23:35

Read the sermon summary: “Never discuss politics or religion in polite company.” This well-known saying recognizes the explosive potential of these subjects to result in conflict. Apparently, Paul didn’t get the memo. Though Paul was careful to avoid conflict, if possible, he didn’t shy away from proclaiming the truth of the gospel, even if it was controversial. In our passage for this Sunday, we see two ways in which the gospel proclamation proved to be controversial. The first controversy began when Paul recounted his commission from Jesus to go to the Gentiles. The second, when Paul spoke of the resurrection from the dead. Yet, three times, the Lord rescues Paul from harm through ordinary means. We see, here, what is described in 1 Corinthians 1:23, “we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.” In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Why did Paul’s commission to the Gentiles result in such controversy? What truth of the gospel is demonstrated in this? What are some implications for us? Why did the proclamation of the resurrection result in controversy?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Is He Worthy
Do you feel the world is broken
We do
Do you feel the shadows deepen
We do
But do you know that all the dark
Won't stop the light from getting through
We do
Do you wish that you could see it all made new
We do

Is all creation groaning
It is
Is a new creation coming
It is
Is the glory of the Lord
To be the light within our midst
It is
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this
It is

Chorus
Is anyone worthy
Is anyone whole
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David's Root
And the Lamb who died to ransom the slave
Is He worthy
Is He worthy
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy of this
He is

Does the Father truly love us
He does
Does the Spirit move among us
He does
And does Jesus our Messiah
Hold forever those He loves
He does
Does our God intend to dwell again with us
He does

Chorus
Is anyone worthy
Is anyone whole
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David's Root
And the Lamb who died to ransom the slave
From ev'ry people and tribe every nation and tongue
He has made us a kingdom and priests
To God to reign with the Son
Is He worthy
Is He worthy
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy
Is He worthy
Is He worthy of this
He is

Is He worthy
Is He worthy
He is
He is
