Read the sermon text: John 8:31-47

Read the sermon summary: In our text for this Sunday, Jesus continues his dialogue with the crowds on the last day of the Feast of Booths. There is a shift in the discourse as he turns his attention to the Jews who had believed in him. According to Jesus, those who are truly his disciples will abide in his word. They will know the truth and the truth will set them free. Free from what? This is the question that drives the exchange. Jesus contends that people are in bondage to the tyranny of sin. The Jews who had believed object on the grounds of a paternal pedigree. As children of Abraham, are they not free by right? Jesus is clear: for those who practice sin, his word will find no place in them. But for those who are born of God, they hear his word, for his word is true. Questions to consider: What Old Testament passages regarding Abraham might be relevant? What is “the truth” that Jesus is speaking of? Are there other places in the Gospel of John that might shed light on this question? What does Jesus identify as the chief characteristic of a child of God?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Living Hope
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope
