Read the sermon text: Ruth 3:1-18

Read the sermon summary: We left off in our story last week with Naomi and Ruth living together. They had been blessed in the land by Boaz with comfort, food, and safety, but they were still childless widows. In chapter 3, Naomi hatches an audacious plan to give Ruth an opportunity for marriage and having children. Ruth carries out the plan with boldness. She puts herself and her reputation at risk as she makes a proposal to Boaz in the middle of the night, “Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.” How will Boaz, a worthy man, respond to such an unusual proposal? The suspense is resolved as Boaz responds positively, for and all the townspeople know that she is a worthy woman. However, there’s a problem. Boaz isn’t the closest relative. There is another redeemer. What if this other man wants to redeem Ruth? What if he is not a worthy man like Boaz? Chapter 3 ends with the future of Naomi and Ruth in uncertainty, but Naomi seems to respond in faith as she calls for patience. The matter will be settled soon enough. Faith sometimes look like action and other times looks like patience. By this passage, we’re led to consider: How might I respond in faith to times of uncertainty? How might faith in God’s promises lead me to action in some circumstances, but patient waiting in others? What situations are you facing in which you need to act in faith? What situations are you facing in which you need to wait in faith?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

By Faith
By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation's grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the pow'r of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God's own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the pow'r to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the pow'r of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In ev'ry corner of the earth

By faith the mountain shall be moved
And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name
