Read the sermon text: Acts 9:32-43

Read the sermon summary: In what ways you live as a functional deist? Deism is the belief that there is a God who created all things, but he does not intervene in the affairs of the universe. Like a cosmic watchmaker, he made the world, wound it up, and stepped back to let it run on its own. In our passage for this week, we see the power and compassion of God on his creation. We also clearly see that these are not simply actions of God’s representatives, but of God himself. Peter says to Aeneas, “Jesus heals you,” signifying that the acts of the Apostles in the book of Acts are actually acts of the risen Lord. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What are a couple of parallel stories of miraculous healings in the book of Luke? What might the author be showing by these comparable stories? How can we avoid living as functional deists and instead live as those who have faith in the present work of God around the world and in our lives?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Death Was Arrested
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
When death was arrested and my life began

Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance
When death was arrested and my life began

Chorus
Oh Your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with You
It's Your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with You

Released from my chains I'm a pris'ner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore
He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend
When death was arrested and my life began

Our Savior displayed on a criminal's cross
Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
That's when death was arrested and my life began

Oh we're free free forever we're free
Come join the song of all the redeemed
Yes we're free free forever amen
When death was arrested and my life began
