Read the sermon text: Galatians 6:6-10

Read the sermon summary: I remember the first time I planted a garden with my kids. We enjoyed getting the soil prepared, planting the seeds, and giving them a little water. The next day, however, they were disappointed. They wanted to know why the seeds hadn’t sprouted into plants yet. They wanted an immediate harvest, but that’s not the way gardens work. Sometimes we experience the same sorts of frustrations and disappointments. We invest in spiritual things and don’t see an immediate return, so we become weary and miss opportunities to do good to others. In this passage, Paul encourages the Galatians with the promise that a great harvest is coming for those who persevere in doing good. Since Paul clearly laid out the gospel of free grace in the first part of his letter, we know God’s favor is not something we could ever earn. We understand, then, that these commands flow from the truths of the gospel. This is what the Spirit is doing in those who have come to faith in Jesus. He is empowering, strengthening, and preserving us in order that we might do good to everyone around us as the opportunities arise. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What do you think is the connection between verse 6 and verses 7-10? What connections are there between the words “flesh” and “Spirit” and the broader context of chapters 5 and 6? What is the condition for reaping in verse 9 and how does this square with salvation by grace alone?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Build My Life
Worthy of ev'ry song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You

Jesus the name above ev'ry other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You

Chorus
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder and show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

Bridge
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
