Read the sermon text: John 18:1-14

Read the sermon summary: John 18 begins with a turn from the High Priestly Prayer of chapter 17. Jesus concluded his prayer to the Father by saying he would continue to make Him known. Now, in chapter 18 we find out the means by which Jesus will continue to make him known: through his betrayal and arrest, and eventually through his crucifixion and resurrection from the dead. Chapter 18 is where the narrative turns toward the trials and eventual death of Jesus. Late Thursday night, Jesus is betrayed by Judas, arrested, and brought before the father-in-law of the high priest, Annas. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: In light of the numerous “I am” statements in John (6:35; 8:12; 10:7, 11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1, 5), what is the significance of Jesus’ words in verses 5 and 6? In verse 14 we find that Caiaphas advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one should die for the people. How do these words from an enemy of Christ show that he is in control of all the events of his crucifixion?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Jesus Thank You
The myst’ry of the cross I cannot comprehend
The agonies of Calvary
You the perfect Holy One crushed Your Son
Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me
Your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus thank You
The Father's wrath completely satisfied
Jesus thank You
Once Your enemy now seated at Your table
Jesus thank You
By Your perfect sacrifice I've been brought near
Your enemy You've made Your friend
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace
Your mercy and Your kindness know no end
Lover of my soul I want to live for You
