Read the sermon text: Philippians 2:5-11

Read the sermon summary: We often emphasize the importance of the fundamentals of the faith, but sometimes we fail to explain them and their implications in a clear manner. This Sunday as we approach Christmas Day, we will consider the importance of the incarnation of Christ. In particular, we will consider the importance of the true humanity of Christ and what we confess in the Creed of Chalcedon, that the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ is “truly God and truly man.” What does it mean that the Son of God became a human? Did God inhabit a human body like a suit? Did Jesus have the mind of God, but the body of a man? Did the Son only appear to be human? Why does all this matter for our faith? As we will see, the true humanity has immense implications for our redemption from sin, our empowerment to live by faith, and our assurance of God’s favor towards us. This Christmas remember that we are celebrating this miracle, that God actually became a man to save his people from their sins and welcome them into his perfect presence forever.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Come Thou Long Expected Jesus (Hyfrydol)
Come Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in Thee
Israel's strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth Thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart
Born Thy people to deliver
Born a child and yet a King
Born to reign in us forever
Now Thy gracious Kingdom bring
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone
By Thine all sufficient merit
Raise us to Thy glorious throne
