Read the sermon text: John 20:1-18

Read the sermon summary: We rightly emphasize the death of Jesus as vital for our faith and salvation. Last week, we saw the author’s emphasis on the fulfillment of Scripture concerning Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for sins and as the one who was pierced to cleanse us from our sin. We should also consider that the resurrection of Jesus is no less important for our forgiveness and salvation, for, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” The themes emphasized in these two paragraphs are the confusion of the disciples concerning Jesus’s resurrection, and Jesus’s interaction with Mary, resulting in her announcing the good news of the resurrection to the disciples. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What Scripture might John be referring to when he says in verse 9 that “as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead”? What do we make of Mary seeing Jesus, but not understanding it was him (v. 14-15), and then of her sudden recognition (v. 16)? What is the significance of Jesus’s words in verse 17?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Christ Is Risen
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely You've bled for us

Chorus
Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven's will
No scheme of hell no scoffer's crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim

O death where is your sting
O hell where is your victory
O church come stand in the light
The glory of God has defeated the night
Singing O death where is your sting
O hell where is your victory
O church come stand in the light
Our God is not dead He's alive He's alive
