Read the sermon text: Zechariah 9-14

Read the sermon summary: Like Haggai, the book of Zechariah emphasizes the promise of God making his presence among his people. Last week, we saw how God promised to send the Messiah to prepare his people to be in his presence by taking away their sins, and to do so by his Holy Spirit as he acts as a Great High Priest and Righteous King. This Sunday, we will see more about this King and how he delivers his people from their enemies. There are several striking themes in this passage, including the Messiah as a Shepherd-King over his people. But this Shepherd-King is portrayed as afflicted and rejected by his people. In the last days, however, God would restore his people by judging his enemies and causing his people to look with faith upon him whom they pierced. At that time, God will establish eternal peace for his people from all nations. The book concludes with the picture of the restoration of God’s people… they will be with him forever and nothing will be unclean. The entire new creation will be holy and pure before the Lord.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
O Praise The Name (Anástasis)
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds His hands His feet
My Saviour on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord oh Lord our God
Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting
The angels roar for Christ the King
He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face
