Read the sermon text: John 5:30-47

Read the sermon summary: In this passage, Jesus continues his defense of his claims to be equal with God, his Father. Verses 19-47 should be read together. In verses 31-47, Jesus appeals to others who have given witness to him as the Son of God sent by God. Since Jesus has so many witnesses, the Jewish leaders have no excuse for rejecting him. Ultimately, they reject Jesus not because they lack adequate evidence, but because the word of God and the love of God are not in them. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What people or things does Jesus say have testified to him? In what things have the Jewish leaders put their hope? How does this passage inform us about how to read the Scripture? How does this passage inform us about reasons why people reject Jesus?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name
Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm He is Lord
Lord of all
When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil
When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless stand before the throne
