Read the sermon text: John 12:1-11

Read the sermon summary: The resurrection of Lazarus from the dead is a climactic moment that sets in motion a series of events which culminate in the crucifixion of the Lord of Glory. As the chief priests and Pharisees plot murder and the crowds seek to be entertained, Jesus is summoned to a retreat just outside Jerusalem, in the town of Bethany. At supper, Mary is overtaken by her great affection for Jesus. In response, Judas condemns her act of love in the most pretentious terms. Jesus then intercedes and defends Mary’s honor against his attack. He knows his time of burial is near. Consider the polarity between Mary and Judas. How was Mary compelled to love Jesus? What drove Judas to oppose her? Is love for Jesus at odds with a concern for the poor? Ponder the priority of a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

My Jesus I Love Thee
My Jesus I love Thee I know Thou art mine
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign
My gracious Redeemer my Savior art Thou
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus 'tis now
I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus 'tis now
I'll love Thee in life I will love Thee in death
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath
And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus 'tis now
In mansions of glory and endless delight
I'll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus 'tis now
