Read the sermon text: Galatians 3:19-29

Read the sermon summary: If the law doesn’t annul the previously ratified promise of God to Abraham… if the law doesn’t justify or give life, then what is it good for? In this passage, Paul argues that the law was added because of transgressions. He uses the images of imprisonment under the law and the law acting as a guardian or schoolmaster until Christ came. We learn that the law was never meant to give righteousness or life. Rather, it was temporary and preparatory, leading people to despair of their own righteousness and pointing them to the need of something else… someone else who would give righteousness and life through faith. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: In verse 19, Paul speaks of an intermediary. Who do you think he is referring to? In verse 26, what does Paul give as the reason why we are no longer under a guardian? What is the main idea of verse 28?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Death Was Arrested
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
When death was arrested and my life began

Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance
When death was arrested and my life began

Chorus
Oh Your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with You
It's Your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with You

Released from my chains I'm a pris'ner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore
He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend
When death was arrested and my life began

Our Savior displayed on a criminal's cross
Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
That's when death was arrested and my life began

Bridge
Oh we're free free forever we're free
Come join the song of all the redeemed
Yes we're free free forever amen
When death was arrested and my life began
