Read the sermon text: John 11:45-57

Read the sermon summary: In this passage we see the shocking results of the raising of Lazarus from death to life. Some of those who saw believed, but almost inexplicably, others run off and report to the Pharisees. The Pharisees hold a council and renew their resolve to do something about Jesus. They recognize that he is doing many signs, but they care more about their own “place” and “nation” than the signs which confirm that Jesus is the Son of God. But even their plan to kill Jesus will backfire. Not only does Caiaphas unwittingly prophesy the substitutionary death of Jesus, their plan to kill him carries out the very plan of God for the redemption of God’s people. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What motives might be underneath Caiaphas’ fear of losing their “place and nation” to the Romans (v. 48)? In verses 51-52 we have the author’s comments regarding Caiaphas’ words… what do these comments add to our understanding about the Jews’ plot to kill Jesus and Jesus’ death? What is the significance of the words, “gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad”?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

The Power of The Cross
Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day
Christ on the road to Calvary
Tried by sinful men torn and beaten then
Nailed to a cross of wood

Chorus
This the pow'r of the cross
Christ became sin for us
Took the blame bore the wrath
We stand forgiven at the cross

Oh to see the pain written on Your face
Bearing the awesome weight of sin
Ev'ry bitter thought ev'ry evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow

Now the daylight flees now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head
Curtain torn in two dead are raised to life
Finished the vict'ry cry

Oh to see my name written in the wounds
For through Your suff'ring I am free
Death is crushed to death life is mine to live
Won through Your selfless love

This the pow'r of the cross
Son of God slain for us
What a love what a cost
We stand forgiven at the cross
