Read the sermon text: Acts 4:32-5:11

Read the sermon summary: Here’s a startling, much needed reminder as we seek to grow in our love for one another in the community of believers: Satan is real and he wants to destroy our unity. He wants to destroy our community. In our passage for this Sunday, Luke gives another summary of the unity of the community in the early church. Believers were selling their possessions to provide for their brothers and sisters. Luke then gives two examples, one positive and one negative, of how this selling of property took place. Barnabus is lifted up as an example of commitment, while Ananias and Sapphira are held up as an example of false commitment. They wanted to the glory of commitment without the cost of commitment. Their joy was ultimately not in Christ and his community, but in money and the praise of men. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What was the sin of Ananias and Sapphira? What was the emotional effect of God’s judgment on Ananias and Sapphira? What do you think was the spiritual result for the community?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (Nettleton)
Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
