Read the sermon text: Galatians 4:1-11

Read the sermon summary: What if you could take a before and after picture of your spiritual life? No, not having anything to do with your physical appearing, but with your soul. In this passage, Paul provides a snapshot of the spiritual lives of Christians before Christ and after Christ. Before, they were enslaved to so-called gods, the elementary principles of the world. After, they were sons and daughters of God. Before, they were ignorant of God and unknown to God. After, they come to know God and are known by God. The turning point, the dividing line between this before and after is the gospel itself, “God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law” (v. 4-5). Paul gives this snapshot to the Galatians that they might understand how ridiculous it would be to go back to their former state. And yet, this is exactly what they were doing in their efforts to be justified by works of the law. Indeed, every time we turn to sin and away from God, we are imitating their utter irrationality. Instead, we ought to find that idea revolting. And we ought to find the prizes of sonship and knowing God as worth more than all the pleasures of this world.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Before The Throne Of God Above
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav'n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart

Chorus
Hallelujah
My life is found in Jesus Christ
Hallelujah
For I am His and He is mine

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me

Behold Him there the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am
The King of glory and of grace
One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased with His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Saviour and my God
With Christ my Saviour and my God

I bow before the cross of Christ
And marvel at this love divine
God's perfect Son was sacrificed
To make me righteous in God's eyes
This river's depths I cannot know
But I can glory in its flood
The Lord Most High has bowed down low
And poured on me His glorious love
And poured on me His glorious love
