Read the sermon text: John 11:38-43

Read the sermon summary: In John’s Gospel, the resurrection of Lazarus, 11:38-44, is the last great miracle before Jesus’ triumphal entry in Jerusalem. In the verses leading up to our passage, we meet Lazarus’ bereaved sisters Mary and Martha. Martha regrets that Jesus wasn’t able to come sooner, for she is sure he would have been able to save her brother when he was merely sick. Jesus tells Martha that Lazarus will rise again. He tells her that he is the Resurrection and the Life, but she seems not to understand what Jesus is about to do. The grieving Mary, with a throng of mourners, meets Jesus and repeats the lament of Jesus’ late arrival. Jesus weeps and asks to see the tomb. The people are confused, some thinking that Jesus’ grief is like their own, born from the sting of death and separation from a loved one. Others scoff at Jesus’ apparent inability to provide a miracle like he had for others. But Jesus wants to reveal himself to the people as the Son of God, sent from God as the savior of the world. As we prepare for our worship gathering this Sunday, let us believe that Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Jesus Son of God
You came down from Heaven's throne
This earth You formed was not Your home
A love like this the world had never known
A crown of thorns to mock Your name
Forgiveness fell upon Your face
A love like this the world had never known

Chorus
On the altar of our praise
Let there be no higher name
Jesus Son of God
You laid down Your perfect life
You are the sacrifice
Jesus Son of God
(You are Jesus Son of God)

You took our sin You bore our shame
You rose to life You defeated the grave
And a love like this the world has never known
'Cause You took our sin You bore our shame
You rose to life You defeated the grave
A love like this the world has never known

Be lifted higher than all You've overcome
Your name be louder than any other song
There is no power that can come against Your love
The cross was enough
The cross was enough
(The cross was enough)
(The cross was enough)

The cross was enough
The cross was enough
