Read the sermon text: Philippians 3:12-4:1

Read the sermon summary: Do you ever feel like pursuing Christ is a struggle? Do you feel guilty for thinking so? Be of good heart. Even In this passage, Paul characterizes the Christian life, namely pursuing Christ, in precisely this way. As a runner strains forward for the finish line, so Christians continually strive for the prize… to gain Christ, to know him, to be found in him, attaining to the same resurrected life that he has. However, it is important to note that Paul doesn’t view this striving merely as intellectual and inward. Nor is it merely an individual pursuit. The devil is fierce in his opposition to the gospel and the danger of falling away from our profession is real. Therefore, Paul enjoins the Philippians and us to imitate him and others who press on to take hold of Christ. Mentors and discipleship relationships are seriously important. We see here that they are not optional. Nor are they simply ways to enhance our faith or give us a spiritual boost. Rather, God uses these sorts of relationships as a means of protecting us and preserving our faith in Christ. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the basis of Paul’s pressing on in Christ (v. 12)? What is Paul’s method of pressing on (v. 13)? How do we rightly understand the sovereignty of God in saving us and the danger of becoming enemies of the cross? What importance does this give to having deep relationships among brothers and sisters in Christ?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (Nettleton)
Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
