Read the sermon text: Acts 27:1-28:16
Read the sermon summary: It is said, “there are no atheists in foxholes.” This suggests that everyone, when faced with a life-threatening situation, tends to seek out some higher power for help or protection. Whether true or not, we see something like this in our passage. The ship carrying Paul to Rome is threatened by terrible storms. Everyone on board except Paul abandons all hope. They toss off all unessential equipment and food. They pray to their gods. Some even attempt to escape unnoticed in a smaller boat. Yet, Paul remains steadfast, trusting in God. What makes Paul so sure that he will be rescued, along with everyone else? It is God’s word of promise which causes him to stand. Note, however, that this isn’t simply a promise concerning one individual, Paul. God’s promise is much wider in scope, as he intends to fulfill his promise found all the way back in Acts 1:8, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Amid our troubles, too, we live with this hope: God’s promises cannot fail. God’s mission cannot fail. And since we belong to God through faith in Christ, God will never abandon us.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Give Me Faith
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to open my eyes
To see that You're shaping my life
All I am
I surrender
Give me faith to trust what You say
That You're good and Your love is great
I'm broken inside I give You my life
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me
'Cause I may be weak
But Your Spirit's strong in me
My flesh may fail
My God You never will
