Read the sermon text: Acts 2:42-47
Read the sermon summary: At CCR we want our community to be marked by deep relationships under the Kingship of Christ. Another name for this is discipleship. But what does this look like? In our passage for this Sunday, Luke gives a summary picture the community life of the early church. New believers weren’t simply sent on their way, but were welcomed into a family. Luke highlights four aspects of this family’s steadfast commitment. They were devoted to the apostles’ teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Further, Luke describes the early church as filled with gladness and generosity as its members share life together. Consider the following questions in preparation for the sermon: Do you think we should read this passage as mainly descriptive or prescriptive (in other words, is this simply telling us what happened then, or is it telling us what our communities should looke like)? In what ways does our church look like this idealic picture community? In what ways does it not?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia)
The Church's one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord
She is His new creation
By water and the Word
From heav'n He came and sought her
To be His holy bride
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died
Elect from every nation
Yet one o'er all the earth
Her charter of salvation
One Lord one faith one birth
One holy name she blesses
Partakes one holy food
And to one hope she presses
With every grace endued
'Mid toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest
Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy
Lord give us grace that we
Like them the meek and lowly
On high may dwell with Thee

Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed
By schisms rent asunder
By heresies distressed
Yet saints their watch are keeping
Their cry goes up how long
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song
