Read the sermon text: Acts 2:1-21

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, we see the fulfillment of Jesus’s words to the apostles in Acts 1:8. The Spirit comes upon the apostles and they receive power to be Christ’s witnesses to the nations who are gathered in Jerusalem. This, then, is the beginning of their giving witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. In a sense, the apostles are already reaching the nations by the power of the Spirit giving them utterance to proclaim the mighty works of God in other languages. However, this isn’t a stand-alone story. The author frames this event as the fulfillment not only of Jesus’s words, but as the fulfillment of the promises of God from the Law and the Prophets. This event signals the establishment of the Davidic Kingdom (2 Samuel 7:4-17). Jesus is the King. The Spirit is the effective means by which this kingdom will be spread through the word of the apostles. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What did the apostles hear and see when the Spirit came? What miracle is emphasized by the reaction of the Jews and devout men from every nation under heaven? In verse 16, Peter begins preaching by quoting the prophet Joel. What question of the text might he be answering (see. v. 12)? What is the answer to that question?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Holy Spirit Living Breath of God
Holy Spirit, living breath of God,
Breathe new life into my willing soul.
Bring the presence of the risen Lord,
To renew my heart and make me whole.
Cause Your Word to come alive in me;
Give me faith for what I cannot see,
Give me passion for Your purity;
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

Holy Spirit, come abide within,
May Your joy be seen in all I do.
Love enough to cover every sin,
In each thought and deed and attitude.
Kindness to the greatest and the least,
Gentleness that sows the path of peace.
Turn my strivings into works of grace;
Breath of God show Christ in all I do.

Holy Spirit, from creation's birth,
Giving life to all that God has made,
Show Your power once again on earth,
Cause Your church to hunger for your ways.
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise;
Lead us on the road of sacrifice,
That in unity the face of Christ
Will be clear for all the world to see.
