Read the sermon text: John 17:1-5

Read the sermon summary: Having taught the disciples in preparing them for life without his physical presence, Jesus turns his words to the Father in prayer. He prays for the Father’s glory, for his own disciples, and then for all his future disciples. In this section of the prayer, Jesus prays that the Father would be glorified in the Son as the Son glorifies him. Glory to the Father will be the result of Jesus accomplishing all the work the Father had given him to do, culminating in the sacrifice of his life for his people (notice Jesus is arrested immediately after this prayer). This is where the glory of God shines brightest in the book of John… Jesus being lifted up as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the relation to Jesus having “authority over all flesh” and his mission “to give eternal life”? What does Jesus say is eternal life? In light of the answer to the last question, how does Jesus then give eternal life and accomplish the work he had been given? What practical implications for you follow from what Jesus says is eternal life?
