Read the sermon text: Micah
Read the sermon summary: How would you rate the Christian life: simple, complicated, easy, difficult? How would you rate your own progress in the Christian life? In the book of Micah, the Lord pronounces judgment upon Israel. Their leaders held to a form of complex religious rituals, but neglected the simple life of faith required by God to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:6-8). It seems so simple doesn’t it? Yet we must realize that its not. It’s actually impossible unless the Lord gives us a Spirit of obedience. Micah shows us that the obedience required must first be given from the Lord himself, not written on tablets of stone but on our hearts (Micah 4:1-2). The Lord will do this not through the faithless leaders of Israel, but through the ruler who comes out of the little place at Bethlehem, whose coming forth is from old, from ancient days (Micah 5:2). The Lord will rescue his people not because of their own faithfulness, but because he delights in his own faithfulness and always keeps his promises (Micah 7:18-20). In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: How does Micah 4:1-2 fit with other themes we’ve seen in the Book of the Twelve? What is the significance of Micah 5:2-5 in relation to other passages of Old Testament Scripture? What is the significance of Micah 7:20 as it refers back to Jacob and Abraham?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven's praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living in His suff'ring
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law in Him we stand
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father's plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured love untold
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e'er restrain Him
Praise the Lord He is alive
What a foretaste of deliv'rance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when He comes
