Read the sermon text: John 16:16-33

Read the sermon summary: You face a battle every day. Will you believe that what you see in front of you tells the whole truth? Or will you believe the word God has spoken? We often remind one another and ourselves that “we walk by faith and not by sight.” But if we’re honest, we will have to admit that sometimes we walk by sight instead of faith. In our passage for this Sunday, Jesus makes promises to his disciples concerning their joy and peace. They will face hostility and will be tempted to think that God does not hear their prayers in the midst of tribulation. But Jesus’ words of promise are designed to create faith in their hearts: “No one will take your joy from you.” “Ask and you will receive it that your joy may be full.” “Take heart; I have overcome the world.” The joy and peace of the disciples is found only in Christ… in his work for them and in his word to them. In preparation for the sermon this Sunday consider the following questions: What image does Jesus give the disciples to explain how their sorrow will turn to joy? How is that image then applied to the disciples? What do you make of verses 26-27; If Jesus is our Mediator how can it be said that he will not ask the Father on our behalf? How would knowing Jesus has overcome the world be a comfort to the disciples? To us?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Forever (We Sing Hallelujah)
The moon and stars they wept
The morning sun was dead
The Savior of the world was fallen
His body on the cross
His blood poured out for us
The weight of every curse upon Him
One final breath He gave
As heaven looked away
The Son of God was laid in darkness
A battle in the grave
The war on death was waged
The power of hell forever broken
The ground began to shake
The stone was rolled away
His (perfect) (reckless) love could not be overcome
Now death where is your sting
Our resurrected King has rendered you defeated
Now forever He is glorified
Forever He is lifted high
And forever He is risen
He is alive and He is alive
We sing hallelujah we sing hallelujah
We sing hallelujah the Lamb has overcome
