Read the sermon text: John 3:1-15

Read the sermon summary: In this passage, Jesus teaches Nicodemus about the necessity of being born again or being born from above. Nicodemus is described as “a ruler of the Jews” and “the teacher of Israel” and yet he doesn’t understand Jesus’ teaching. In this way, the reader is shown that even the greatest religious rulers or teachers cannot understand or enter the kingdom of God unless they are born again. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What repetition do you see in these verses? What contrasts? What truth(s) is Jesus illustrating in verse 8? Verses 13-15 may seem unrelated to verses 1-12… What connection(s) might there be?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Great God
O great God of highest heav'n
Occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
Conquer ev'ry rebel pow'r
Let no vice or sin remain
That resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
Make me Yours forever more

I was blinded by my sin
Had no ears to hear Your voice
Did not know Your love within
Had no taste for heaven's joys
Then Your Spirit gave me life
Opened up Your word to me
Through the gospel of Your Son
Gave me endless hope and peace
Help me now to live a life
That's dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
From the evils that I face
You are worthy to be praised
With my ev'ry thought and deed
O great God of highest heav'n
Glorify Your Name through me
