Read the sermon text: John 15:18-16:4

Read the sermon summary: Apple or Android. Carolina or Duke. Cats or Dogs. Republican or Democrat. These are all divisions presented to us by the world. And yet, there is a much more important dichotomy presented to us in the words of Scripture and in our passage for this Sunday. It is the dichotomy of those who are of the world and those who are not of the world. Jesus warns his disciples that the world, those who oppose God and Christ, will hate and persecute them. This shouldn’t surprise them, for this is exactly how the world has treated Jesus. However, Jesus also assures his disciples that the world will not escape judgment. They have no excuse, for they have seen God in the flesh and still rejected him. Jesus also encourages his disciples that he will help them, both by his Spirit and by his words, to not only hold firm to the faith in the midst of persecution, but also to faithfully bear witness to him in it. Because Jesus overcame the hatred of the world in his own death and resurrection, his disciples can have confidence that the world’s hatred and hostility will not have the final word over them. In preparation for the sermon this Sunday, consider the following questions: What contrasts do you see between this passage and the one from last week’s sermon? How does this passage anticipate the next paragraph in which Jesus describes the work of the Holy Spirit? How do Jesus’ words about the hostility of the world prepare his disciples to face it? What do we make of this passage if we don’t feel like the world hates us or is hostile towards us?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
The Lion and The Lamb
He's coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down
And every chain will break
As broken hearts declare His praise
For who can stop the Lord Almighty
Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He's roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before Him
So open up the gates
Make way before the King of kings
The God who comes to save
Is here to set the captives free
For who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord (Almighty)
