Read the sermon text: Genesis 50

Read the sermon summary: As we come to the last chapter in the book of Genesis, we also come to the last chapters of Jacob’s and Joseph’s lives. But we also once again come to see one of the preeminent themes in the book: God’s sovereignty to work for the good of his people in the fulfillment of his promises. We could take Joseph’s words, “God meant it for good,” and apply them to many of the passages we have seen throughout the book of Genesis. From Adam and Eve, and the Serpent to Jacob’s deception to Judah’s immorality, God used the evil actions of his creatures in such a way that they were bringing about good for his people and carrying forward his plan of redemption. We can even say this of what the Jewish leaders and Roman officials did to Jesus when they brutally killed him on a cross. You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good to bring it about that many people should be kept alive. For in the death of Christ, we are made alive. What else can we learn from this passage? How does this theme of God working all things for good apply to our church? To our families? To each of us individually? How can we encourage one another with these truths without becoming insensitive to suffering?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

By Faith
By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation's grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the pow'r of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God's own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the pow'r to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the pow'r of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In ev'ry corner of the earth

By faith the mountain shall be moved
And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name
