Read the sermon text: Acts 14:21-28

Read the sermon summary: Last Sunday, we took note of the ongoing battle between the enemies of God and the people of God. Satan is trying, if it were possible, to thwart the plans of God in growing his kingdom. At every turn, however, the Apostles responded with courage and boldness, and they continued to proclaim the gospel. In our passage for this Sunday, we see that the Apostles not only preached the gospel, but also encouraged those who believed to persevere in the faith, establishing churches and appointing elders to lead those churches. This seems to be the pattern throughout the book of Acts and the rest of the New Testament. God is not simply content to save individuals and leave them on their own. Rather, his desire is to enfold new believers into the life of local churches, both for his own glory and for the strengthening of his people in the faith. What do you think it means that they “strengthened the souls of the disciples?” What is the difference between making converts and enfolding new believers into the life of a local church? How does planting churches connect with the greater purpose of God building his kingdom?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

How Deep the Father's Love For Us
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts no pow’r no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
