Read the sermon text: John 15:1-17

Read the sermon summary: Do you feel that your Christian walk is fruitful? Often, we find ourselves claiming to be believers but living as though the primary distinctive of Christianity, the work of Jesus Christ, has little to no bearing on our lives. In Christ’s farewell address to the disciples his teaching anticipates his upcoming departure, and he desires to prepare them for continuing the Christian life. Jesus uses a metaphor which reveals how desperately the disciples will need to abide in Christ in order to be his fruitful, obedient servants. He further elaborates on what it is to abide in his love in light of the gospel. Finally, Jesus uses the new commandment from chapter 13 to highlight how the disciples can powerfully demonstrate that they are his disciples by loving one another. Those who abide in Christ will live fruitful lives that prove to the world they are his disciples and give him glory. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What does it look to abide in Christ? In what ways do our actions reveal that we believe his words, “apart from me, you can do nothing.”? Read 1 John 2:1-11 and consider, how do these passages connect assurance of salvation with obedience? Are we loving our brother? How specifically does the gospel compel us toward unity?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Fount of Love
O fount of love divine that flows
From my Savior's bleeding side
Where sinners trade their filthy rags
For His righteousness applied
Mercy cleansing ev'ry stain
Now rushing o'er us like a flood
There the wretch and vilest ones
Stand adopted through His blood
O mount of grace to Thee we cling
From the law hath set us free
Once and for all on Calv'ry's hill
Love and justice shall agree
Praise the Lord the price is paid
The curse defeated by the Lamb
We who once were slaves by birth
Sons and daughters now we stand
O well of joy is mine to drink
For my Lord has conquered death
Victorious forevermore
The ancient foe is laid to rest
Hallelujah Christ is King
Alive and reigning on the throne
Our tongues employed with hymns of praise
Glory be to God alone
From Him through Him to Him be all praise
