Worship Preparation: September 27, 2020

Read the sermon texts and quote: John 13:34-35; Colossians 3:12-17
“If we do not give thanks daily for the Christian fellowship in which we have been placed, even where there is no great experience, no discoverable riches, but much weakness, small faith, and difficulty; if on the contrary, we only keep complaining to God that everything is so paltry and petty, so far from what we expected, then we hinder God from letting our fellowship grow according to the measure and riches which are there for us all in Jesus Christ.” Life Together, Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Read the sermon summary: According to Jesus in John 13:35, the distinguishing mark of his disciples and how others will know them is their love for one another. This informs our purpose statement at Christ Church Rolesville: “We exist to love God's glory, so we can love God's people, and go out in love to serve God's world.” This Sunday we’ll consider what it means to be a part of a local church by focusing on the responsibilities of a local church member. At CCR, we seek to make our commitments to these things explicit by using a church membership covenant and declaring those commitments to one another publicly. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: Members, have you recently revisited the church covenant to remember your commitments to others in the church? Is it possible to have unity in a church and yet also have disagreements or different preferences? What do you think would be the effect on a church if members regularly pray for and give thanks for one another? What would be the effect of failing to do those things?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
O Praise the Name (Anástasis)
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds His hands His feet
My Saviour on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord oh Lord our God
Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting
The angels roar for Christ the King

He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face
