Read the sermon text: John 13:21-38

Read the sermon summary: In this passage, we observe yet another turning point in the ministry of Jesus to his disciples. When Judas leaves the group, Jesus begins preparing those who are “his own” for his departure. This section begins what is commonly referred to as “The Farewell Discourse.” In light of Jesus’ looming absence, he gives them this command: As I have loved you, so you must love one another. This commandment calls for serious consideration and humility. As we see from Peter’s example, the way of love and faith isn’t self-confident independence, but humble dependence upon God for his grace. Our love for God and for one another cannot be based upon our own strength, but only upon Jesus’ love for us. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the significance of the disciples not understanding who it was who would betray Jesus? Jesus tells his disciples “Where I am going you cannot come.” How do his words differ from when he said this to the Jews in John 7:34 and 8:21? What is ironic about Peter’s words to Jesus in verse 37? In what ways do we display a similar self-confidence and independence?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (Nettleton)
Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love
Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
