Read the sermon text: John 14:1-14

Read the sermon summary: What if Jesus explicitly told you that one day you would deny him? It would be an understatement to say that it would upset you. Yet, after telling this very thing to Peter, Jesus tries to comfort him and the other disciples. To overcome their fears, they must trust in him. Jesus reassures them that his departure is actually for their good. It is part of the plan. Through his suffering, death, and resurrection he is both preparing a place for them and preparing them for communion with the Father in heaven. However, Jesus’ words reveal that there is work left for them to do while he is physically absent. Their lives will not be characterized by simply waiting for Jesus to come back, but by prayerful activity for the glory of God. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: In verse 5, Thomas confesses that the disciples don’t know where Jesus is going or how to get there. Considering Jesus’ answer in verse 6, what is the destination he’s speaking of and what is the path to get there? What does Jesus emphasize in verses 9-11? In verses 13-14, what qualifications does Jesus give concerning asking our prayers and Jesus’ response?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
By Faith
By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation's grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight
By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the pow'r of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God's own hand
A place where peace and justice reign
We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight
By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the pow'r to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave
By faith the church was called to go
In the pow'r of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In ev'ry corner of the earth
By faith the mountain shall be moved
And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name
