Read the sermon text: John 14:15-31

Read the sermon summary: Have you ever had doubts and wondered if the Holy Spirit was just a figment of your imagination, like an imaginary friend you had as a child? As Christians, we make some audacious claims. One such claim is that the Spirit of God is not only with us, but that he also lives in us. In our passage for this Sunday, Jesus promises this very thing to his disciples. He says that he will give them “another helper” who is “the Spirit of truth.” This one, Jesus says, “dwells in you and will be in you” (v. 17). Further, this one who will be in them is somehow vitally connected to the Father and Son, for Jesus says in verse 23 that “we will come to him and make our home with him” (v. 23). In verse 26 Jesus also tells his disciples that this Spirit inside them “will teach you all things.” One might think that Jesus going away means everything is ending, but truly it means things have just begun (we could say, “the beginning of the end”). For Jesus’ departure to the Father would mean the next step in fulfillment of the new covenant would take place; the giving of the Holy Spirit. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What other passages do these themes of the Spirit being inside God’s people and teaching them all things bring to mind (if needed, look at cross-references in your Bible)? How are Jesus’ promises concerning the Spirit related to the new covenant? What does it mean, practically, that the Spirit would be in the disciples and teach them all things? How might these truths apply to us?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

I Need Thee Every Hour (I Need Thee)
I need Thee every hour
Most gracious Lord
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford

Chorus
I need Thee O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now my Savior
I come to Thee

I need Thee every hour
Stay Thou near by
Temptations lose their pow'r
When Thou art nigh

I need Thee every hour
In joy or pain
Come quickly and abide
Or life is vain

I need Thee every hour
Most Holy One
O make me Thine indeed
Thou blessed Son
