Worship Preparation: August 17, 2014

Worship Preparation – Sunday, August 17, 2014

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:
• Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
• Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: Psalm 16

3. Read sermon summary: Psalm 16 is about finding contentment in God. David is talking about the blessing of trusting in God for all that you need in life. He points to God's faithfulness, and the promise of the future hope of resurrection and living in God's presence as encouragement to trust God and his instructions now. David sees God as his refuge and only source of good. He trusts his commands, and looks to him for direction. All of this is based on the overwhelming confidence that David has in God's goodness and faithfulness to fulfill his promises. David fully expects to live forever in the presence of God, and he is already looking ahead to the resurrection of Christ as his assurance for that great promise.

4. Consider the following song and its relationship to the sermon:

Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
Come behold the wondrous mystery
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven’s praises
Robed in frail humanity

In our longing, in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ, who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us

Come behold the wondrous mystery
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living, in His suffering
Never trace nor stain of sin

See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law; in Him we stand

Come behold the wondrous mystery
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory

See the price of our redemption
See the Father’s plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured, love untold

Come behold the wondrous mystery
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e’er restrain Him
Praise the Lord; He is alive!

What a foretaste of deliverance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when he comes
