Worship Preparation – Sunday, January 27, 2013

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: ESV – Matthew 6:5-13.
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

3. Read sermon summary:
This Sunday we will be starting our eight-week study of prayers in the New Testament. My desire is that as we explore these recorded prayers, God will ignite in us a greater passion for prayer. We will start in Matthew 6, with “The Lord’s Prayer”. I think the point of the passage is to answer the question, “What is prayer that pleases God?” Jesus is instructing us in what our prayers should look like when they are centered on God, and our aim is to please him. This line of thinking will prove to be very helpful as we seek to understand how and what to pray.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

O Great God
O great God of highest heav'n
Occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
Conquer every rebel pow'r
Let no vice or sin remain
That resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
Make me Yours forever more

I was blinded by my sin
Had no ears to hear Your voice
Did not know Your love within
Had no taste for heaven's joys
Then Your Spirit gave me life
Opened up Your word to me
Through the gospel of Your Son
Gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life
That's dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
From the evils that I face
You are worthy to be praised
With my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav'n
Glorify Your Name through me

Take My Life
Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee
Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise
Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of Thy love
Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee

Take my voice and let me sing always, only for my King
Take my lips and let them be filled with messages from Thee
Take my silver and my gold not a mite would I withhold
Take my intellect and use every power as You choose

Here am I, all of me
Take my life it's all for Thee
Take my will and make it Thine, it shall be no longer mine
Take my heart it is Thine own, it shall be Thy royal throne
Take my love, my Lord I pour, at Your feet its treasure store
Take myself and I will be ever, only, all for Thee
Take myself and I will be ever, only, all for Thee
