Worship Preparation – Sunday, July 1, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend.
Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read text for Sunday: Col. 3:5-11 (ESV).
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

3. Read sermon summary:
This week Paul is beginning to apply what he told us last week. In verses 1-4 Paul was telling us that we have died, been raised, and are hidden in Christ. We have this new life, and new unity with God. Now, Paul wants us to take off the old self, and put on the new self. In other words, he wants our outward actions to start matching up with our new spiritual lives. This terrific change has taken place inside of us, and it is time to start displaying it. The great news is that this new behavior doesn’t earn us favor with God, but this new behavior is being produced by the fact that God already loves and accepts us.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

It is Well

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin - O the bliss of this glorious thought! -
My sin, not in part, but the whole,
Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, (It is well,)
With my soul, (With my soul,)
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Written by Philip Paul Bliss, Todd Fields

O Fount of Love

O fount of love divine that flows from my saviors bleeding side
Where sinners trade their filthy rags for His righteousness applied
Mercy cleansing every stain now rushing o'er us like a flood
There the wretch and vilest ones stand adopted through His blood

O mount of grace to thee we cling from the law hath set us free
Once and for all on calvary's hill love and justice shall agree
Praise the Lord! the price is paid the curse defeated by the Lamb
We who once were slaves by birth, sons and daughters now we stand

O well of joy is mine to drink for my Lord hath conquered death
Victorious forevermore, the ancient foe is laid to rest
Hallelujah, Christ is King! alive and reigning on the throne
Our tongues employed with hymns of praise, Glory be to God alone!
