Worship Preparation: July 20, 2014

Worship Preparation – Sunday, June 20, 2014

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:
• Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
• Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: Romans 8:1-17

3. Read sermon summary: Do you want life, peace, and freedom – do those sound appealing to you? If they do, then you’ll want to pay careful attention to the message of Romans 8 because these things—life, peace, and freedom—are gifts given by the Spirit, gifts that belong to those who are led by the Spirit. This chapter is one of the richest passages in all of the Bible, and one of the clearest passages in the Bible regarding the Holy Spirit. Here we learn who the Holy Spirit is and what he does, and we also learn what it means for us to be led by the Spirit. Romans 8:14, “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” And to be led by the Spirit is the same as walking in the Spirit, or being full of the Spirit, or bearing the fruit of the Spirit. These are overlapping metaphors to describe life lived according to the impulses of the Spirit. According to Romans 8, life in the Spirit is characterized by three experiences: freedom from condemnation (vv. 1-8), hope of resurrection (vv. 9-11), and strength for warfare (vv. 12-17). How have you been experiencing these things in your own life? How mindful have you been of the Spirit's role in each of these experiences? Pray that God would lead us to Spirit-filled supernatural living.

4. Consider the following song and its relationship to the sermon:

All the Poor and Powerless
All the poor and powerless
And all the lost and lonely
All the thieves will come confess
And know that You are holy
And know that You are holy

And all will sing out
Hallelujah
And we will cry out
Hallelujah
All the hearts who are content
And all who feel unworthy
And all who hurt with nothing left
Will know that You are holy

And all will sing out
Hallelujah
And we will cry out
Hallelujah

Shout it
Go on scream it from the mountains
Go on and tell it to the masses
That He is God
We will sing out
Hallelujah
And we will cry out
Hallelujah

All Sons and Daughters
