Worship Preparation: June 14, 2015

1. Read the text: Genesis 16:1-16

2. Read the sermon summary: God has made promises and he intends to fulfill them in his own timing and by his own means. In this passage Abram and Sarai attempt to get the blessing of God by their own ways rather than trusting in God. What they find is that this only ends in strife and disappointment. We are tempted in the same way today. When we try to achieve the blessing of God in our own timing and by our own means the result is always disastrous. But Christ patiently waits for God’s timing and submits to his means in fulfillment of the promise of redemption. He is not simply our example in this, but our very salvation… the means by which God fulfills his promise to rescue us from sin and death.

3. Consider this song in relationship to the sermon:

Come Thou Fount of Ev'ry Blessing

Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
