Worship Preparation: June 21, 2015

Sunday, June 21, 2015

1. Read the text: Genesis 17:1-27

2. Read the sermon summary: God is faithful to his promises even in the face of human failures. Thirteen years after Abram and Sarai sinfully conspire to fulfill God’s promise on their own, God returns to Abram and reaffirms his promises. This time he commands Abraham to keep the covenant of circumcision, which represents a life of single-hearted devotion to God. We too are called to live lives of complete devotion to God, but we fail in this every day. Circumcision ultimately points us to Christ, the covenant keeping God-man who deserved the covenant blessings, but received the covenant curses for the sake of sinners. He was cut off from God so that we might be welcomed in and made heirs of the covenant blessings.

3. Consider the following song lyrics in relationship to the sermon:

The Stand
You stood before creation
Eternity in Your hand
You spoke the earth into motion
My soul now to stand

You stood before my failure
And carried the cross for my shame
My sin weighed upon Your shoulders
My soul now to stand

So what can I say
And what can I do
But offer this heart O God
Completely to You

So I'll stand
With arms high and heart abandoned
In awe of the One who gave it all
I'll stand
My soul Lord to You surrendered
All I am is Yours
