Worship Preparation – Sunday, March 9, 2014

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:
• Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
• Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: 1 Timothy 1:8-11 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. (ESV)

3. Read sermon summary: It this section of 1 Timothy, Paul's aim is to instruct Timothy on the proper use of the law. The law is not to be held over believers, as if they have to work to earn God's favor. Instead, the law is for those who do not believe. It's purpose is to show the lawless their sin, and point them to their great need for a savior. As Christians, we should love the law, meditate on the law, and even try to follow it, but not because we can earn any merit with God. We live according to law because it reflects the heart of the God who saved us, and we long to be more like him.

4. Consider the following songs and their relationship to the sermon:

You Alone Can Rescue
And You alone can rescue
You alone can save
You alone can lift us from the grave
You came down to find us led us out of death
To You alone belongs the highest praise

Who O Lord could save themselves
Their own soul could heal
Our shame was deeper than the sea
Your grace is deeper still

You O Lord have made a way
The great divide You healed
For when our hearts were far away
Your love went further still
Yes Your love goes further still

Jonas Myrin and Matt Redman

There is Love that came for us
Humbled to a sinner's cross
You broke my shame and sinfulness
You rose again victorious

Faithfulness none can deny
Through the storm and through the fire
There is truth that sets me free
Jesus Christ who lives in me

You are stronger You are stronger
Sin is broken You have saved me
It is written Christ is risen
Jesus You are Lord of all

No beginning and no end
You're my hope and my defense
You came to seek and save the lost
You paid it all upon the cross

So let Your Name be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
