Worship Preparation – Sunday, May 13, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend.

Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read text for Sunday. ESV – Col. 1:9-14.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

3. Read sermon summary:
This week in Colossians we will be studying Paul’s prayer for the church in Colossae. We can gain some instruction on how to pray for each other, but more importantly we can gain some insight into how God works in our lives. We will look at a helpful pattern that emerges in the text as Paul asks God to move in certain ways, and explains the fruit that will come in the lives of the Colossians. We know that God will continue to work in our lives to mold and change us, but this passage gives us real specifics about how he is doing that.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

Before the Throne of God Above

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great high Priest whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hand
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because a sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am
The King of Glory and of grace
One in Himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God

Come Thou Fount

Come thou fount of every blessing tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it mount of Gods redeeming love.
Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart take it seal it; seal it for thy courts above.
