Worship Preparation – Sunday, May 20, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend.

Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read text for Sunday: ESV – Col. 1:15-20
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

3. Read sermon summary:
In verses 15-20 of Colossians 1, Paul is trying to clearly communicate that Christ is above all. He created all, sustains all, redeems all, and is even the reason for the existence of all things. Paul wants there to be no mistake that Christ is preeminent, that he has the first place. He wants the church in Colossae to know that it would be foolish to think they need anything else besides him. My hope for this week is that we will be reminded of this foundational truth. Christ is all we need. He is first in all things, and should hold that position in our lives.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

Behold Our God

Who has held the oceans in His hand?
Who has numbered every grain of sand?
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice

Behold our God seated on His throne
Come let us adore Him
Behold our King, nothing can compare
Come let us adore Him!

Who has given counsel to the Lord?
Who can question any of His words?
Who can teach the one who knows all things?
Who can fathom all his wondrous deeds?

Who has felt the nails upon His hands
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man?
God eternal, humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign

You will reign forever! (Let Your glory fill the earth)
You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill the earth)
You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill the earth)
You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill)
