Worship Preparation: May 24, 2015

Sunday, May 24, 2015

1. Read the text: Genesis 13:1-18

2. Read the sermon summary: Because God is faithful, we must live by faith. Our text presents a contrast between Abram, who walks by faith, and Lot, who walks by sight. Living by faith moves us to lay down our own rights for the sake of others, make decisions based on godly wisdom, rest in the promises of God, and worship God in response to his faithfulness. Ultimately, Abram is a type of Christ (as is Lot by way of contrast). Christ is the one who lives by faith in God and gives up his very life (not just his rights) so that those who believe might become heirs of the promise.

3. Consider this song in relationship to the sermon:

The Solid Rock
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In ev’ry high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

His oath His covenant His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

When He shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne
