Worship Preparation – Sunday, May 27, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend.

Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read text for Sunday. ESV – Col. 1:21-23
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

3. Read sermon summary:
Paul has been instructing the church in Colossae in the nature of Christ, his work, and sufficiency. He wants them to know that Christ is all they need. So far, he has been talking about the Gospel on a very large scale, repeating words like heaven, earth, and creation. In verses 21-23, he is going to turn to us as individuals, and talk about how the Gospel has changed each one of us. Read the passage, and reflect on the work of God in our lives through what Christ has done.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

There is Love that came for us
Humbled to a sinner's cross
You broke my shame and sinfulness
You rose again victorious

Faithfulness none can deny
Through the storm and through the fire
There is truth that sets me free
Jesus Christ who lives in me

You are stronger, You are stronger
Sin is broken, You have saved me
It is written, Christ is risen
Jesus You are Lord of all

No beginning and no end
You're my hope and my defense
You came to seek and save the lost
You paid it all upon the cross

So let Your Name be lifted higher Be lifted higher
Be lifted higher

All I Have is Christ

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God's love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

Hallelujah all I have is Christ
Hallelujah Jesus is my life

Now Lord I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
O Father use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You
