Worship Preparation: May 4, 2014

Worship Preparation – Sunday, May 4, 2014

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:
• Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
• Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: 1 Timothy 3:14-16 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory. (ESV)

3. Read sermon summary: This week Paul is summing up for Timothy his purpose for writing this letter. He wants him to know that these instructions about the church are vitally important. They are not just helpful for keeping order, but they are essential building blocks for the church if the church is going to be able to carry out the mission they have been given of defending the truth. Ultimately, the whole thing hinges on keeping Christ in the center. The message of Jesus, and the hope he provides for salvation must be proclaimed. If the church is going to do that, they must heed Paul's instructions about how they should act in the household of God.

4. Lord’s Supper: We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper together this Sunday, as we do the first Sunday of each month. In preparation for this visible celebration of the gospel, please take advantage of this time to consider the state of your soul. Resolve conflicts that you have ignored, repent of sins that you have hidden, and take time to consider the great love of a Savior who has reconciled us to God by his death and resurrection.

5. Consider the following song and its relationship to the sermon:

You Said
You said, Ask and you will receive
Whatever you need
You said, pray and I'll hear from heaven
And I'll heal your land

You said, Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea
You said, Lift up your eyes
The harvest is here, The kingdom is near

You said, Ask and I'll give the nations to you
O Lord that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands
Will see Your light as it rises on us
